The 'Rast Bast Chara' concept has a number of associated rituals – these are to ensure all parties concerned conform to the decision, and all objections are noted.

The manner in which Rast Bast Chara is offered in a traditional 'Shiv Akhara' is as follows:

The traditional 'Akali Nihang Baba Darbara Singh Sanatan Suraj Bansia Shastar Vidiya Shiv Akhara' is first set up by laying out the weapons, followed by saluting and bowing to the weapons at the start and/or end of the training session. Each individual, according to their capacity places his/her offering on the left side of the weapons at a place traditionally reserved for past 'Gurdev' Singhs. Thus offerings are symbolically being made at the feet of the past masters.

If one cannot afford an offering then that is accepted - NO one is compelled in any way to make an offering.

Traditionally, the poor were not only taught 'Vidiya' for free, but even given money, clothing and food from 'Shiv Akhara' treasury. If one wishes to learn for free, they may do so, however it may result in being not enough 'Rast, Bast, Chara' to sustain the 'Gurdev'. As such, the 'Akhara' may be in danger of closing or be suspended till it can be financed suitably.

So it is in the collective and self-interests of 'Shagird' who can afford it to ensure there is enough 'Rast, Bast, Chara'. Any remaining surplus remaining once the 'Gurdev' has taken his share, is considered traditionally the will of 'Akal'.

On the other hand if there is not enough 'Rast, Bast, Chara' and the Akhara consequentially closes, then that is also seen traditionally by Akali Nihang Singh Khalsa as Akal's will. All and everything is within 'Hukam'.
