Once the 'Dand Yudh' warriors faced each other in the center of the battlefield, they first tried to impress each other with their superior skill by wielding their weapons dexterously, and moving in 'Pentra'.
Synchronously, they called out challenges to the other, insulting each other, and trying to psychologically intimidate one other. Then finally they engaged in 'Dand Yudh'.
It has been known that some deulists would hold postures for many hours. One flinch could give away an entire strategy if the opponent excelled at studying and anticipating strikes. As such, duelists were masters of patience.
The rules of 'Dand Yudh' were as follows:
a) Do not attack on the sly. Launch initial attack to start contest only after formally warning your enemy
b) Do not strike from behind
c) Never initiate strike an unarmed person with a weapon - let him take a weapon in hand or alternatively, engage him unarmed combat
d) A warrior on horseback may not strike a warrior on foot
e) Fight only a competent and worthy opponent
f) Kill cleanly and do not allow the opponent to suffer needlessly (ie, 'Chatka')
g) If opponent is wounded and knocked down, give him a chance to surrender. Then if he does not surrender, you may finish him off as befits the situation
h) If opponent casts his weapons aside and asks mercy, then grant him mercy
i) If opponent defeated flees battlefield then do not pursue.
