This college Gatka came to be termed as 'Angrez' Gatka by the custodians of the true original Hindu Sikh fighting art such as Akali Nihang Baba Mangal Singh.

At present, from a purely combat orientated limb of Sanatan Hindu Sikh Shastar Vidiya, the general Gatka found within Sikhi has completely deteriorated into an exhibition art.

In 1996, Sarvan Singh defining original 'Gatka' as a battlefield sport spoke of Gatka in the past and now:

'Gatka is a Punjabi battlefield sport. Sometime through it you had great gatherings of warriors blocking and striking blows. From times of Guru Hargobind to the times of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, learning Gatka was part of army training. In those times this sport was very popular. In every village were Gatka Akhara where training was done every morning and evening. Like in Japan and other eastern countries Karate is accepted as a sport of self defense, like that Gatka was the Punjabi sport of self defense. In Punjabi parlance if someone just asked for a stick or sword you got the reply:
“Why do you want to play Gatka?”
Now this sport remains limited to a few Akharas, countable on your fingers in some towns. Or the Nihang Singhs play Gatka. You may (now) only see this sport as a 'Numaishi' [exhibition/show/display] in the (Sikh religious or cultural) processions. Sometimes at Kila Raipur or some other village sports day some Gatkabaj may display the skill of his sport and the onlookers can take pleasure at looking at this fading away indigenous sport.'
('Punjab Deea Desi Kheda', Sarvan Singh, Pa. 27)

The true 'Chatka' form of Sanatan Hindu Sikh Shastar Vidiya is now very rare.
