Towards the end of the annexation of Punjab, and after the Indian Mutiny of 1857, a new 'fighting system' emerged in the Punjabi public arena.
By this time the British had, on the whole, crushed all Sikh resistance to their Raj. Collaborator Sikhs had been fully established as the leaders of the Sikh nation in the Punjab. As a result, in the Indian mutiny of 1857, the Sikhs greatly assisted the British in crushing the rebellion.
Whereas the British placed restrictions on martial practices in North Eastern India, they relaxed them in the Punjab, even though they did not remove them entirely. However, these limitations were largely dependent upon who was practicing these martial arts.
As the years of manipulative British Raj had produced a British Raj accommodating 'Sikhi', so too did the new fighting form of the traditional Sikh combat system, known as 'Gatka', also accommodate the British Raj.
