Sanatan Hindu Sikh Shastar Vidiya, due to its tremendous lineage has been known by many names throughout history.

Amongst the ancient Hindu Sikh religious and historical texts, total fighting and TRUE combats arts of the Hindu Sikhs have been referred to as:

    a) 'Shastar Vidiya'
    b) 'Ayudh Vidiya'
    c) 'Vir Vidiya'
    d) 'Yudh Vidiya'
    e) 'Jang Dee Vidiya'
    f) 'Fulthabaji'
    g) 'Platha'
    h) 'Mall Yudh'

…but have NEVER been termed 'Gatka'.

The term 'Gatka' is derived from the Persian name for sword-like training stick known as 'Khutka' that was introduced into India during the 17th century.

Hence 'Gatka'/'Gatkabaji' (also known as 'Patabaji'), is but a training methodlogy. This is the initial basic training given to a novice - which, given time, training and guidance may lead to training with live weapons.
