Gatka was, though very important as a training method is ONLY a limb of total Sanatan Hindu Sikh Shastar Vidiya.
To reiterate, NO ancient Hindu Sikh text refers to the total combat system as 'Gatka'. Sarvan Singh in 1996 first referencing 'Mahan Kosh', by Kahn Singh Nabha, goes on to speak of 'Gatka' thus:
'In the beginning in Gatka at first is used a three-hand span stick covered in leather and a 'Fari' meaning 'small shield'. It was the Persian word Khutka which changing in Punjabi came to be known as Gatka.'
('Punjab Deea Desi Kheda', Sarvan Singh, Pa.27)
In the 'Mahan Kosh' itself, an encyclopedia of Sikhi, from which the above quote is derived, 'Gatka' is defined not even as first limb of sword fighting, but is instead defined as first limb of 'Gadhayudh'. However, referencing a small leather shield suggests that Kahn Singh Nabha is confusing a club with a sword-stick:
'Gatka - a three-hand span stick, used to teach the first limb of club fighting. It has a leather covering. In the right hand holding a Gatka and in left hand a 'Fari', two men play with each other. Persian - Khutka.'
('Mahan Kosh', Kahn Singh Nabha (1930) Pa. 395)
K.S. Akali in his 'Gatka Rules' stipulated the Gatka be as follows:
'1.Gatka. Gatka shall be 3 feet long and from 10 to 18 ounces in weight. It must be covered in loose leather, canvas or niwar. No nail, iron hook etc. will be allowed.'
('The Art Of Gatka Fighting', K.S. Akali (1936), Pa. 58)
