Akali Guru Hargobind inaugurated Akali Nihang worship of the Indian goddess of war – 'Chandi', representing the primordial power of 'Akal' at the 'Akal Bunga'.
Within the 'Akhara' and alter of Akali Nihang shrines, Chandi is physically represented by the 'Tulwar'. The worship of mother Chandi is in essence the worship of the sword. This worship from the times of Akali Nihang Guru Gobind Singh has been done through reading ballads of 'Chandi' from 'Dasam Guru Durbar' and anointing the weapons, battle standards, battle drums and Sikh warriors foreheads with decapitated goats blood. Such worship was done till the mid-1920s throughout all major Sikh shrines such as the Akal Takht in Amritsar.
After the 1920s, the impostor modern 'Akali' Sikhs stopped it. However, this tradition is still practiced at Sach Khand Hazur Sahib (Maharastra) as it is the main Sikh shrine in southern India and lies outside modern S.G.P.C Akali control.
