Established on 2nd October 1879, this 'Sabha' (gathering/institution) was set up with the assistance of the British Raj by the Christian Missionary-educated Sikhs, loyal to the British. Sikhs such as Bhai Gurmukh Singh, Bhai Gurdit Singh, Bhai Vir Singh, Bhai Kahn Singh Nabha, Teja Singh Bhasauria, Bhai Randhir Singh, etc. fall into this group.
This group was set up to counter the 'Sanatan Singh Sabhia' that had been set up by the Sanatan (traditional) Sikhs - the Udasis (missionaries), Nirmalas (intellectuals), Seva Panthis (philanthropists) and Akali Nihangs (warriors).
