Also known as 'Takshila', 'Takkasila' was an important Vedic/Hindu and Buddhist institute of learning established approx 5-6th century BC. Located 35 miles west of Islamabad. Thought to be founded by the Indian king Taksh (son of Bharata and Mandavi from the Ramayana), it was originally called 'Taksh Khand' (Tashkent). The Mahabharata was recited here during Janamejaya's (son of Parikshit, the Kuru heir) 12 year long 'Sarp Stra' (snake sacrifice).

According to Akali Nihang oral tradition, this is the place where all the 'Kal Yudhan' (combat styles) of Sanatan Hindu Sikh Shastar Vidiya were taught and refined.
