The Shivite link with the Sikh martial heritage would become far clearer in the tenure of the tenth Sikh Guru - Akali Nihang Gobind Singh (1661-1708).
The tenth Guru graded the Akal Sena into the high ranking 'Akali' and lower ranking 'Nihang' some time in the 1680's.
According to 'Chandi Di Var', Nihangs trace their mythological origins into the ancient Indian 'Yuga' known as 'Sat Yuga'.
The Akali Nihang Singhs were dressed in blue, with tall blue 'Damala' embelished with 'Ardh Chand'. This potent symbol, the insignia of 'Mahakal', became known to Sikhs as the 'Khanda'.
