In 1703 the tenth Guru, Akali Nihang Guru Gobind Singh, introduced the wearing of a loose piece of cloth on top of the Akali 'Damala'.

This representing the holy Ganges sprouting from top of the head of Shiva's matted hair.

This piece of cloth was the 'Farra' of the Akali Nihang Singh Khalsa warriors of the tenth Guru. The Khalsa he had created in 1699 with the blessings of goddess 'Chandi'/'Kalika', after first propitiating her successfully in 1698 on the hill top of Nena Devi:

“People with old ideas the Gurbilas literature and Suraj Parkash etc. texts. The oral tradition stories as told by the ancient 'Sampida' (Sikh orders Udasis, Akali Nihangs, Nirmalas and Sewapanthis), and some edicts of the Guru's quoting texts all say and accept that the Guru Sahib employing a sacrificial fire manifested the Devi. …Ten to twelve years before it had been the accepted norm to think the tenth Guru manifested the Devi. In the Tenth King's work, the Devi has been greatly praised. If 'Akal Purkh' has been called by him 'Mahakal' and accepted as father - like this he calling 'Devi Bhagauti Kalika' accepted her as mother.”
('Khalsa Sudhar Tru', Avtar Singh Vahiria, 8 Volumes, (Agency Kar Khana Khalsa Lahore, Sant Singh Loodar Oriental Press, Lahore, 1900), 5:80-81)
