Since ancient times, the martial arts of Northern India have been referred to in ancient texts such as 'Dhanu Veda', 'Agni Puraan', 'Ramayana', 'Mahabharata', 'Bhagvad Gita', etc., as 'Shastar Vidiya'.

Even the unarmed techniques of 'Bahu Yudh' came under the designation of 'Shastar Vidiya'.

Sanatan Hindu Sikh Shastar Vidiya was the art of the traditional Indian warriors the 'Kyshatriya'. It was this ancient Sanatan Kyshatriya tradition, which the Sikh Gurus sought to revive so as to overthrow the oppressive foreign tyrannical rule of 'Turk' in the 17th century and scour the oppressed, mainly Hindu, masses of India.

Hence in its purest form Akali Nihang Singh Khalsa Sanatan Hindu Sikh Shastar Vidiya is a traditional Indian battlefield combat art.

The spiritual dimension to the art lies in the simple fact it stands to uphold universal 'Dharam'. Dharam is the divine law of 'Akal', which brings peace and harmony to all so as all mankind may co-exist together. Dharam is established so that holy personages of various religious and social backgrounds may co-exist, as they do in the 'Adi Guru Durbar'.
